October 24, 2024

Session Description:

Diabetes mellitus in cats and dogs is commonly seen in general practice. Achieving good glucose control for these patients can significantly improve their quality of life  In part one of this series, we reviewed dietary management, insulin treatment, and proper administration.

In part two of this free 1-hour webinar, Dr. Orla Mahony, M.V.B., DACVIM, DECVIM, shares her methods for monitoring diabetic glycemic control in dogs and cats. She will also introduce attendees to the use of the newly approved sodium-glucose co-transporter inhibitors (SGLT2i) for diabetic cats.

Attend this webinar to learn about:

  1. Effective monitoring methods for diabetic patients, including interstitial glucose monitoring
  2. The use of SGLT2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) for diabetic cats and how to select ideal patients for this treatment.
  3. Potential complications of SGLT2i use, such as euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis.

Orla M. Mahony, MVB:

Dr. Orla Mahony is a small animal internist with a special interest in endocrinology. A clinical associate professor at Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Mahony teaches senior students during their small animal internal medicine rotations. Growing up in Ireland and spending time on her family’s farm, Dr. Mahony says she always wanted to be a veterinarian. After attending University College in Dublin for veterinary training and an internship, Dr. Mahony moved to England to work in small animal practice. She wanted to specialize further and was accepted into a residency program at Tufts, where she has worked since 1994. Although she enjoys all aspects of endocrinology, she finds helping diabetic patients especially rewarding. When not at work, Dr. Mahony enjoys spending time with her family, visiting relatives in Ireland, and walking her dog.
