Lab Tip

NOTICE REGARDING FILLING OF 2 ML BLUE TOP TUBES [BTT, citrate tubes]

Best quality coagulation time results will be obtained if the 2 mL capacity citrate tube (BTT) is filled at least 2/3 full (1.2 mL of blood) and preferably to full capacity (1.8 mL). Filling these tubes to half capacity (1.0 mL) may lengthen coagulation times(up to 20%).

CORRECTIONS TO JANUARY 2007 ANTECH NEWS – CANINE BRUCELLOSIS

Agar Gel Immunodiffision (AGID) Test
The AGID test now used by Cornell uses cytoplasmic protein antigen (not cell wall antigen) and is a very specific test. However, brucella culture is still recommended to verify a diagnosis of brucellosis.

Reporting Confirmed Cases
Brucella canis is a reportable disease in CO, MN, and GA. However, veterinarians are encouraged to check with authorities in their state to determine the current requirements pertaining to reporting and handling confirmed cases of canine brucellosis.
